Chapter Eighteen
Spring had come to Boston and the trolleys had returned to clanging their way down the streets of the city without the slush and snow plows to stop them. The trees were leafed out and the walkers had a bounce in their step as they made their way down the elm-lined streets.
John had recently taken up art lessons at the Museum of Fine Arts and was anxious to attend the opening of his teacherâs solo exhibit and introduce Lily. As he escorted her through the large front doors of the imposing Gothic Revival brick building, he picked up his step as he drew her into the exhibit hall.
âWhy John, how nice to see you. Thank you so much for coming.â
âI wouldnât miss it for anything, Professor.â
âAnd, who is this lovely lady who has accompanied you?â
âProfessor Benson, this is Miss Lily Paxton. She hails from Oklahoma but is here to attend school and visit with her grandmother who as you know is one of your greatest patrons.â
âWhy, of course, Mrs. Paxton has been a generous donor and has kindly supported our venture when we founded the Boston Art Club. We are very indebted to your grandmother and we welcome her very lovely granddaughter.
âBut, I expected you would be perhaps dressed in coarser dress and look much more rough and tumble than your delicate posture would let on. We get very few visitors from the territories.â

âWell, if you are an example of an ambassador Iâm sure that will come about. But first, you must share with me the wealth of knowledge you must have of the landscape and all its resources. I have longed to paint such a rugged territory and perhaps someday I will.â
âThe land is vast and open. There are no cities to clutter the landscape as there are in the east. The prairies stretch for miles and the scent of the wildflowers fills the air.
âThe ground is rich in minerals and the forests are filled with wood and game. The mountains stretch toward a horizon that is endless.
âPerhaps you will visit one day and see for yourself. You would be a welcome guest.â
âI would be honored and I might just take up such a kind invitation. But first, you must browse the paintings and indulge yourselves with tea and cookies which the patrons have so generously provided.â
Frank Weston Bensonâs paintings were beautiful and filled with the discipline he acquired from the masters he studied with in his many years of travel in Europe. But, Lily could sense Johnâs passion and the urgency he must feel to put on canvas what he had bottled up for so many years in a life he had never chosen.
As they searched for the refreshments a young man, rather
